Is this run on the rail bed?
Hi Cathy, No this run will not be on the rail bed. It will be along the single track trails below the rail bed.
Is the course pretty flat?
Hi Cathy, not affiliated with the race organisation, but I have a sense of the area so I hope this information helps.
The 5k could be flat or rolling, but I can’t see the other distances being so. Previous longer runs in the area would start at the Stewart Road East parking lot (Crawford) and run up to the KVR via the Lost Lake Trail. I can’t think of any 21km that can be covered in the area that will not entail some serious elevation gain. Still, it’s a nice place to run – I was just up there today with my dog.
Here’s hoping we see more details on the race pretty soon! I’d imagine that someone will start to scope a course now that the snow is receding from the hillsides.
Hello Cam, Thanks for the note. We are going to start finalizing our 5, 10 and 21 km courses over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for more info including course profiles, course maps and possible videos of the courses.
Hi Cathy, We will try to keep the course on the flatter side. We obviously are limited by what is available to us. But as a general rule we keep the 5 km course away from any big hills and try to create a course that is fun yet still challenging enough that you feel you got a good workout. Our 5 km races will all try to be very similar so you know what to expect once you have done one of them.
I run this area each week starting at the Stewart Rd parking lot. As just a rough figure for a 5KM, starting at the the parking lot of Stewart Rd go:
#1: either up the lost lake trail to Teddy bear Junction then back.
#2 go from parking lot to middle bench,Upper Bench, to Connector/Jeckle & Hyde/Windfall/Teddy Bear Junction & back down lost lake trail. That is about a 550 ft elevation gain/decent and 6km.
The area just a bit higher is called Flamingo flats. It’s much more flat and nice with closed in trees.
Here’s a link from one of my run GPS track:
How is the course? IS it pretty hilly?
I did the 21k route last weekend. The course has ups and downs but there are only two real climbs. The first is from the 1.5k mark to the 5k mark and is about 300m of elevation gain. This is the only climb you’ll be making if you run the 10k. If you continue on the 21k route, you will have to make another climb of about 370m from about the 9k mark to the 14.5k mark. I don’t know about the 5k route.
when will the course elevation be posted?
Hello Shari,
We have just finished making the maps and course profiles for the 5km and 10km races. We hope to have the map and course profile for the 21km race finished and posted within the next week and a bit.
How many people registered so far?
Can we drive to the race start? Or will it be a shuttle?
Hi Shari, There is plenty of parking at the event location in Kelowna. Glad to see you are coming out for another Dirty Feet Race.
Do we pick up our race packages the day of at the event
, or is there an earlier pick up?
Hey Mark,
We will have race package pickup before the race and the morning of the race. More details coming soon on this and they will be emailed out to all registered racers once posted.
Thanks
Dirty Feet
I ran the 21k course on Saturday. It was tough, but fun. I’m going again this Saturday, May 14, at 9:30 from the Myra Bellevue parking lot at the end of Steward Rd. E., if anyone wants to join me. I’ll be wearing a red Death Race T-shirt. It will be an easy training pace with two snack breaks and pauses at the trail junctions for people to catch up. Bring your own snacks and water and expect to be out for 3 hours.
Is there accommodations close to the race start? I am coming in from out of town.
Hello Leona,
There is not much accommodation close to the race start however we do have a deal with a local hotel for a discounted rate for the race. For more information on this deal check out this link. Accent Inns.
I am on the fence about entering the 10k or the 5k- how tough will the course be? My partner is planning on running with me however he is nursing a leg injury that may or may not be better by race day. What is the latest we can enter to ensure he is healthy?
Hello Marni,
The 5 km course is designed to be a great introduction to trail running and showcases what trail running is all about. The 10 km course has a few more hills and more single track to test the runners a little more. As for the latest you can enter. This is tough as the race will be capped so I would recommend checking back to the site and if you are on facebook follow us there for more up to date updates of how full the race is.
The race sounds like terrific fun. I’d love to know a little more about the route though. I’ve been able to gather from “Mike’s” post that it’s in Myra Belvue park … and I’ve seen the google earth maps … but could someone outline exactly which trails are being used ~?~ … looks like you start out on Fairlane ~?~ … but not clear after that. If you could add a written course description to the info on the home page that would be terrific! Many thanks … Yours in running and in staying at least a full stride ahead of the bears … Tom C.
Hello Tom,
Thanks for the question. We have now posted a quick list of the trails that are being used by the 5, 10, and 21 km courses on the same page as the race maps and profiles.
Thanks
I have yet to do a trail run in Kelowna – somewhat new to the area – and thinking about the 5K. How hard of a run is it/average time from last year?
Looking forward to it
Hello Alison,
This is the first year for this race so no average times for it. We are going to be at the start area this tuesday May 17th for a free North Face Demo Trail Shoe Day. If you are interested please come out and we can chat more about the race and show you some of the trails we are going to be using for the race.
Never ran trails…got trail shoes just the other day, done lots of road running and nerous about signing up.. I hate the fence
Hi Annette,
Glad to see you are signed up for the race. You will have a great time and lots of fun with all the other runners. Look forward to seeing you out there on June 5th.
Would it be appropriate to wear x-country spikes on the trail?
I would not recommend wearing spikes. The trail is quite hard in areas and rocky. I don’t believe you would have any spikes left by about 2km in. I recommend trail running shoes, they tend to have good sticky grip and nice cushioning for your feet.
What sort of gels, etc are you going to have at aid stations on the course
Hello Patrick,
The aid stations will be stocked with chips, popcorn, sweet snacks like jelly beans and licorice, Organic Orange and Organic Bananas. We will have water, eload and Coke for your drink options. We will not have gels at the event as we find so many people have such strong personal preferences to brands and flavors of gels.
Ran up there this am, some spots dry, some very wet, a creek is running through Boris. Muddy, too. Hopefully will dry out for the weekend.
Awesome Diane,
Thanks for the trail update. We will see you on the weekend.
How many aids stations are there and what are the approx distances between them.
